ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

WOMEN'S ADVOCACY

After attending the 27-hour Community Training hosted by SAFV each fall (not 2018), or completing the Online Training offered by the University of Alaska,  volunteers need 13 hours of on-the-job training with SAFV advocates to fulfil the state’s mandated training time. SAFV regularly looks for volunteer advocates to fill in during staff meetings or times that are particularly busy. Ideally, volunteer advocates come for two or more hours every week at the same time. Experienced volunteers might be called on short notice to fill in for a whole shift.

CHILDCARE

SAFV's Children's Services seeks volunteers for childcare during direct services groups. This would be providing respite care to enable parents in attending groups that provide spaces for support and healing. Childcare volunteers are asked to submit a background check which is available at the Trooper’s Academy. SAFV will reimburse the cost. Childcare volunteers are asked to attend the child abuse section of the volunteer training or meet with the Children's Program Coordinator for training, as well as submit fingerprints for a complete background check through the Sitka Police Department.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

SAFV's Children's Services seeks volunteers to support a once per week after school program for youth. Activities will include games, art and structured group time. After School Program volunteers are asked to submit a background check which is available at the Trooper’s Academy. SAFV will reimburse the cost. Childcare volunteers are asked to attend the child abuse section of the volunteer training or meet with the Children's Program Coordinator for training, as well as submit fingerprints for a complete background check through the Sitka Police Department.

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

Volunteers with gardening skills are welcome to mow the lawn, trim shrubs, and remove invading weeds. In the wintertime, we would like to have a committed volunteer to plow our parking lot and shovel snow on the stair and walkway on snowy mornings.

CLEANING & PAINTING

Volunteers are welcome to support SAFV staff with weekly cleaning of offices and rooms. Another opportunity is to deep-clean the children's room, unoccupied bedrooms, and common areas like the laundry room, hallways, residents' kitchen, refridgerators, and freezers. Cleaners may come regularly or as as needed. SAFV also occasionally needs to repaint rooms and hallways. Please let us know if you would like to help with that.

COOKING MEALS

If you like cooking for groups, usually up to 15 people, you could come cook a meal at the shelter anytime. You can be a role model for residents who are not used to cooking. Also, we like to provide for a meal for women who attend some of our support groups. Please call for dates and times.

EVENTS

We need help with SAFV events, like the Choose Respect March, displaying DV Awareness flags, setting up library displays, Girls on the Run, Boys Run set up and cheering, and other awareness and prevention efforts.

CLERICAL ASSISTANCE

Occasionally, we need help in the administrative office. This could include shredding documents, copying materials, folding newsletters, or cleaning and rearranging storage areas.

FUNDRAISING

Our two main fundraisers are the annual Family Fiesta and Honoring Women. We need help before and during the events, like soliciting auction items, hanging flyers, making desserts for the auction, set up and clean up, serving food and beverages, taking photos, and moreWe wil post dates and times on our website homepage when they become available.

RECYCLING

We welcome volunteers who can come on a regular basis and take all of our recyclables to the city recycling center.
