Youth Prevention Project

Sitka Youth Leadership Committee

The Sitka Youth Leadership Committee (SYLC) is a group for student leaders interested in initiating positive social change in their community. This spring (2010) student leaders from Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka High schools worked together to promote positive interactions between the three high schools in Sitka. SYLC was awarded a mini-grant from the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault to initiate a campaign promoting respect both within and across the schools.

The Sitka Youth Leadership Committee began their campaign with a survey administered to a sampling of students at all three high schools in Sitka. Click here to view survey. The results were used to assess the severity of the problem, to provide guidance for campaign activities and as leverage for moving forward with proposed ideas. The activities included student-led discussions on respect, diversity and equality; public service announcements recorded at the local radio station; posters; and a final spring fever event at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club where pizza, ice cream, and interactive games were offered.
